CALABASAS : Planners Consider Expansion of Project
After hearing comments for and against the proposal this week, the Calabasas Planning Commission is expected to decide June 2 whether to allow the expansion of a planned office and retail center to include a cinema complex and more shops and restaurants.
“There is a lot of division in the community over this,” said Planning Commissioner Allan Cooper. “Some people would like to be able to walk to the shops and restaurants, and others are worried about the traffic and other things the expansion would bring.”
About 40 residents testified about the Calabasas Park Centre project at the Planning Commission meeting Thursday night. The meeting was moved from City Hall to the A. E. Wright Middle School gymnasium to accommodate about 200 spectators, Cooper said.
As approved by Los Angeles County supervisors in 1989, the 1.5-million-square-foot Ahmanson/Kilroy project south of Calabasas Road between Park Granada and Parkway Calabasas would include up to 50,000 square feet of retail space.
About a year ago, faced with sluggish demand for office space, the developer asked the city of Calabasas to allow 150,000 square feet of shops and restaurants and possibly a cinema complex.
The Planning Commission will hold another public hearing on the project June 2 before considering a recommendation, said Planning Director Steve Harris. After that, the City Council will hold its own hearings on the matter.
