A day after the Rams announced that Haywood Jeffires had agreed to terms on a one-year deal, the three-time Pro Bowl receiver said Friday that he would re-sign with the Houston Oilers.

Jeffires agreed to terms with the Oilers Friday on a one-year, $1.25-million contract with an option year valued at $1.9 million. He expects to sign by Monday.

“This was one of the scariest moments anyone could dream of,” Jeffires said. “It’s like fighting a war. But I feel good about what happened.”

Believing they had a deal done Thursday, the Rams sent assistant coaches Joe Vitt and Steve Moore to Jeffires’ home in Greensboro, N.C., to meet with the player and his agent, Fred Joseph. After a series of meetings Friday, Jeffires chose Houston.

“We believed they had accepted our contract proposal,” said Jay Zygmunt, Ram senior vice president.

Jeffires rejected the Rams’ original three-year, $3.9-million offer on April 15 because he wanted more money, and the Rams tried unsuccessfully to trade for Dallas’ Alvin Harper on draft day.

“I never wanted to leave the Oilers,” Jeffires said. “Because there has always been a special place in my heart for Houston. Now I can concentrate on football.”

Veteran Ram receivers are Flipper Anderson, newly signed free agents Greg McMurtry and Nate Lewis, Ernie Jones, Sean LaChapelle and injured Todd Kinchen.

They also selected two receivers in the April draft--Isaac Bruce of Memphis State and Chris Brantley of Rutgers.
