A team of fourth-grade students from Valencia Elementary School took several awards during a recent countywide mathematics competition.

Competing against 23 other fourth-grade classes at the Orange County Mathematics Field Day held in Fountain Valley, the Valencia students won first place in mental math computation, along with second and third places in other categories.

The Valencia team, composed of Matthew Henry, Michelle Lee, Joanna Oster, Erik Sun and Jeffrey Kempler, studied for several months to prepare for the competition.

“These kids can go on to be the nucleus of the Laguna Hills High School academic decathlon team in a few years,” said Councilman Randy Bressette, referring to the local academic team that has won state and national honors in recent year.

One of the projects that won an award for the team was a statistical survey of upper-grade students, which was turned into a report that was judged at the competition.

“We are very proud of our fourth-grade math team,” said Janice Mecham, a Valencia teacher who coached the fourth-graders. “They spent many hours preparing for the tournament.”
