Former Educator to Run for College Board

Saying the district needs tighter fiscal control and better access to its managers, former educator John Tallman said Monday that he will run for a seat on the Ventura County Community College District’s Board of Trustees.

Tallman, who worked as a teacher and vice chancellor at Ventura College for more than 20 years, said he will try to beat out incumbent Karen Boone in Area 1 on the fall ballot.

“The decision-making process could be better,” said Tallman, a Ventura resident who retired last year. “Faculty voices aren’t heard at all, and some people are intimidated from speaking. Therefore, the best decisions are not always made.”

Tallman, 64, said the district “is fiscally fragile and unstable due to poor income projections and lack of awareness of changing conditions” in the funding processes.

“The district badly needs a trustee with an understanding of community college finance,” said Tallman, who spent one year as chief fiscal officer at Ventura College.

Boone, appointed to the board in 1992 when Gregory Kampf resigned, has already said she would seek election.

The four-week filing period for candidates opens July 18.
