NEWPORT BEACH : Residents Invited to Budget Study Series

Share

City officials are encouraging residents to attend a series of budget study sessions this month and in June to see how $60 million in taxpayer money will be spent.

The first meeting was Monday and will be followed by sessions on May 23, June 9 and June 13 in the City Council chambers at City Hall. All of the meetings are scheduled for 2 p.m. The seven-member City Council will review the budget page by page at the sessions.

The city is working on a plan to close a $3-million deficit in its 1994-95 budget. City Manager Kevin J. Murphy laid off seven city workers on May 1 and has proposed the elimination of 26 other positions that are vacant or will become vacant.

Five police officers, a fire captain and the director of the Marine Department were among those let go.

At the June 13 meeting, the city will also hold a public hearing at which residents can express their concerns to their elected officials.

The council is tentatively scheduled to adopt the budget at the June 27 meeting, the last one before the end of the fiscal year.
