HUNTINGTON BEACH : Junior Lifeguard Tryouts Start Today

Youths wanting to learn about ocean safety, first aid and marine life are encouraged to try out today for the junior lifeguard program.

Huntington State Beach Junior Lifeguards will hold tryouts from 9 a.m. to noon at Edison High School, 21400 Magnolia Ave. in Huntington Beach.

Pool tryouts will also be held Sunday and on June 11 and 12 at the high school. Two beach tryouts will take place June 25 and 28. The six-week program begins July 5 and is open to youths aged 9 to 17.

The program costs $290 per child and $240 for each additional child in a family.

Requirements include being able to swim 100 yards in less than two minutes, tread water for five minutes and swim underwater for 10 yards.
