The next time you go to Julian (“Weekend Escape,” April 10), don’t go through Escondido. Continue on (California Highway) 78 and follow the Wild Animal Park signs. This will take you onto a two-lane road that goes through lovely country and past the ostrich farm. You can make a right on a small asphalt road which will bring you out west of the San Pasqual history center, or continue another half-mile to hook up with 78 by the animal park. It’s easier and prettier.

Julian is not a center of gourmet dining, but the Julian Cafe has a pretty fair chicken pot pie, a great barbecue sandwich and a super hamburger. The Italian restaurant behind the cider mill isn’t bad either. And don’t forget to try the old-fashioned malts at the local drug store--$2.50, but enough for two. For the best apple pie it’s Farmer’s Market in Wynola.

And don’t go (to Julian) on Monday or Tuesday if you’re a shopper; most stores are closed.
