Los Angeles City Council President John Ferraro, who is also the Coliseum commissioner, said Alameda County Supervisor Don Perata, who is running for the Democratic nomination for state controller, isn’t “helping his image in L.A.” by trying to entice the Raiders back to Oakland.

Ferraro wondered how Perata could be seeking Southern California votes while at the same time trying “to steal L.A’s football team.”

But Perata insisted Oakland is only trying to help Los Angeles out of its earthquake troubles when it offers Davis a contract to return to the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum for one year.

“I know John (Ferraro) and I’m very fond of him,” Perata said. “All this has never been an effort to steal but simply to make available an alternative playing site in California should the L.A. Coliseum not be ready to perform.”

Los Angeles officials said, however, that the Coliseum will be ready for the first Raider regular-season game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 11.
