THOUSAND OAKS : Council to Consider Free Library Access
Thousand Oaks council members tonight will consider granting non-residents three months of free library access to make up for the main branch’s prolonged post-earthquake closure.
While Thousand Oaks residents can use both the main library and the Newbury Park branch for free, out-of-city readers must pay $55 a year. Several cardholders have called the city to complain that they lost three months of access when the main library closed for repairs to the ceiling, carpet and children’s reading room.
The Newbury Park branch remained open, with extended hours, while the main library was dark. But much of the main library’s reference material remained inaccessible to researchers.
To give non-residents a full year’s worth of service, Councilwoman Judy Lazar has suggested extending each cardholder’s renewal date by three months.
“It’s really a good gesture,” Lazar said. “We recognize that people who paid for their library cards deserve a full year’s use out of them.”
