ALHAMBRA: Councilman Boyd G. Condie has become mayor in the city’s annual reorganization. Councilwoman Mary Louise Bunker has stepped into the position of mayor pro tem and is in line to become mayor next year.

COVINA: After 10 months as interim city manager, Fran Delach has been named city manager by the City Council. Delach, who has held various administrative posts in his 16 years with the city, will earn $89,000 a year.

MONTEREY PARK: Asian American community leaders attended this week’s City Council meeting to protest the ousting of city librarian Jeannette Cheng as “Asian bashing.” Mayor Judy Chu said the city’s Library Board decided to force Cheng’s resignation and the council had no power to override the decision.

LA VERNE: The City Council voted to oppose card casinos in neighboring Pomona, saying that increased crime would spill over into La Verne. The council also sent a letter to the Pomona City Council, requesting that it complete an environmental study before approving two proposed casinos.

POMONA: A citizens group attempting to recall Councilwoman Nell Soto has appealed the finding by City Clerk Elizabeth Villeral that they collected too few valid signatures to force an election. The Recall Soto Committee says 233 signatures--90 more than needed--were wrongfully disqualified.

WALNUT: The City Council has decided to cut its subsidy to the local county branch library, reducing services from five days to two days a week starting July 1.

WEST COVINA: A city-owned and operated retail store that sells everything from an old street sign to a parking meter, has relocated from the Eastland Shopping Center to The Plaza at West Covina, 1200 West Covina Parkway. The store, City Haul, also will carry merchandise from the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, including toe tags.
