The Mighty Ducks say they are close to signing Valeri Karpov, their third-round pick in the 1993 entry draft.

“We hope to have the deal done by June,” General Manager Jack Ferreira said. “I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. He’s coming over (from Russia) and we’ll probably wait until he gets here to sign the contract.”

Ferreira said the Ducks remain “far apart” in negotiations with Paul Kariya, their top pick.

Karpov, a 22-year-old right wing, scored three goals and had one assist for Russia during the Olympics. The Russians finished fourth. He also played 32 games for Traktor Chelyabinsk this last season, scoring 13 goals with 16 assists.

In other news, San Diego, the Ducks’ minor league affiliate, named Walt Kyle their new coach. Kyle, 37, replaces Harold Snepsts, who was fired May 9.

Kyle coached Seattle of the Western Hockey League the last two seasons and was one of Ron Wilson’s assistants on the U.S. team that was fourth at the World Championships this month.
