Two carjacking suspects arrested after a high-speed chase in Carson have been linked to a similar vehicle robbery in Hollywood less than 24 hours earlier, sheriff’s officials said Thursday.

William Brown, 20, and Tyril Sibley, 18, both of Los Angeles, were arrested after the driver of a new Pontiac Firebird was robbed of his vehicle at gunpoint Wednesday evening near the South Bay Pavilion.

As a sheriff’s deputy took a report from the victim, he spotted the Firebird pass by the mall, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Brent Becker. Authorities chased the suspects for several miles on Wilmington Avenue until the Firebird crashed into a tree near Dominguez Street, Becker said. The deputies crashed into the back of the Firebird, but there were no serious injuries.

When he was arrested, Sibley was wearing a bandage to cover a fresh gunshot wound to his neck, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Jerry Kaono. He may have been shot during a carjacking in Hollywood, where the armed owner of a Mazda 626 was robbed by two men at gunpoint just outside his home.

The victim fired several shots as the two men fled, Los Angeles Detective Michael Thrasher said. The victim did not know if his shots struck any of the robbers, Thrasher said.

Sheriff’s deputies also found credit cards that belonged to the victim in the Hollywood carjacking, Kaono said. The Mazda 626 was found in the lot of the South Bay Pavilion, he said.
