Simpson Leads Delayed Colonial After 65

Scott Simpson shot a seven-under 65 Friday to take the lead in the uncompleted second round of the storm-disrupted Southwestern Bell Colonial golf tournament at Ft. Worth. Simpson had a 36-hole total of 131.

Rookie Guy Boros, son of Hall of Fame player Julius Boros, shot a 64 and shared second place among the finishers at 133. Boros was tied with Steve Pate, who also had a 64, and Mike Reid, who shot a 66. Phil Mickelson, making his first start since breaking a leg in a March skiing accident, shot a second consecutive 68.

Jim Dent fought through high winds with four birdies on the back nine and shot a two-under 68 to share the first-round lead in the Bell Atlantic Seniors tournament at Malvern, Pa.

On the 441-yard 13th hole, Dent was in deep trouble--on a cart path behind a tree. Rather than take a drop off the cart path, he hit a four-iron off stones that went around the tree to within four feet of the pin. “It might have been the best shot of my life,” he said.

Nancy Ramsbottom shot a 71 to take a two-stroke lead midway through the LPGA Corning tournament at Corning, N.Y. Ramsbottom, who has not won in 10 years on the tour, was at 135, nine under. Martha Nause was at 137.

Defending champion Arizona State moved into sole possession of the team lead with 881 strokes, 12 fewer than USC, and the Sun Devils’ Emilee Klein overtook teammate Wendy Ward for the individual lead in the NCAA women’s golf championship at West Linn, Ore. Klein, a sophomore, had a 54-hole score of 212. Ward, the second-round leader, was at 214. The Trojans’ Jill McGill shot a 72 and was fourth at 217.

Basketball

Duke basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski, who led the Blue Devils to consecutive NCAA titles in 1991 and ‘92, is reportedly considering an offer from the NBA.

The Herald-Sun of Durham, N.C., quoted sources close to Krzyzewski as saying there was a 50-50 chance that he will join the NBA after being recruited by NBA Commissioner David Stern.

Jurisprudence

Angela Link has sued Laker guard Anthony Peeler for $3 million in punitive damages because of an incident May 30, 1992, at the University of Missouri. Link says that Peeler, whom she was dating, bit her and pointed a pistol at her. Peeler pleaded guilty in June of 1992 to carrying a concealed weapon and is on five years’ probation over the incident.

Vandalism charges have been filed against six Stanford athletes in an attack on a campus sculpture celebrating gay freedom. Wrestler Thomas Irwin and baseball player Todd LaRocca were charged with felony vandalism, authorities said. Baseball player Robert Gardner and football players Jason White and Mark Butterfield were charged with misdemeanor vandalism and resisting arrest. Baseball player Brian Dallimore was charged with misdemeanor vandalism.

A Florida State football player paid $29,000 to buy a sport utility vehicle only three days before the Seminoles defeated Nebraska in the Orange Bowl to win the national championship.

Cornerback Corey Sawyer, one of several Florida State players who admitted accepting clothes and cash from an agent in possible violation of NCAA regulations, apparently paid cash for the vehicle.

Sawyer’s mother, Lydia Clark of Key West, Fla., told the St. Petersburg Times that she and her husband financed the purchase.

Switzerland, the first opponent for the United States in the World Cup, beat Liechtenstein, 2-0, at Basel, Switzerland. . . . Three-time national sprint car champion Robbie Stanley, 26, of Brownsburg, Ind., died of head injuries suffered in a crash during a race at Winchester, Ind. . . . The San Francisco 49ers are close to signing defensive end Richard Dent to a two-year, $2-million contract. . . . Bobby Riggs, 76, and Gordon Mulloy, 80, will play seniors Dorothy (Dodo) Cheney and Corky Murdock in a doubles match Monday at 4 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Club.
