LOS ANGELES : City Council OKs 50% Cut in Trash Surcharge

Share

The Los Angeles City Council has approved a 50% cut in the surcharge residents pay for automated refuse collection containers.

Effective July 1, homeowners will pay an extra $1.50 on top of the regular $3 monthly sanitation equipment charge. For apartment dwellers, the total monthly fee will fall to $3, with the surcharge reduced to $1.

The council levied the extra fee two years ago to balance the budget. The surcharge is scheduled to expire June 30, 1995.

The reduction reflected the council’s desire to give businesses and residents a break on taxes. The council also approved a cut in the 7.5% business tax surcharge.

Mayor Richard Riordan proposed eliminating the entire business tax surcharge as a gesture to soften the city’s anti-business image. But the council wanted residents to get relief too, and halved the sanitation equipment surcharge as a compromise.
