Parks: Land Parcel Donated to Citizens Group

Share

A South Bay family has donated half an acre of land in Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park to a nonprofit citizens group.

The Zappas Family Trust gave the land to the Harbor Park Restoration Trust.

The half-acre lot was the only part of the park that was privately owned, said Frank O’Brien, chairman of the group that has worked to preserve and improve the park since 1971.

The Zappas trust had planned to build a housing development on the land, Michael Zappas said, but “the construction options we looked at didn’t seem viable, and this gift will ensure that the land remains in good hands.”

The 230-acre park on the border of Wilmington and Harbor City contains one of the last remaining freshwater wetlands and riparian woodlands in Los Angeles County.

A master plan suggesting park improvements was recently presented to Los Angeles by the citizens group.
