BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Pitcher Wanted, Smith Offered

Share

The Angels, determining that left fielder Dwight Smith is expendable, have had trade discussions that would send him to the Baltimore Orioles for left-handed reliever Brad Pennington, according to highly placed sources.

But the Orioles are trying to talk the Angels into players other than Pennington.

While the Orioles continue to balk about trading Pennington, sources say, another team has inquired about Smith.

The Angels have been trying to trade Smith for weeks, according to several clubs, but it was only this week that the Orioles expressed serious interest.

If Smith is traded, the Angels will move Jim Edmonds into left field to platoon with Bo Jackson. The Angels then would call up J.T. Snow from triple-A Vancouver, where he is hitting .294 with eight home runs, to let him play first base or have him platoon with Eduardo Perez.

The Angels confirmed that John Farrell will have at least one more start before a decision is made on his fate. Farrell, 1-2 with a 9.00 earned-run average, probably will start some time next week, although Manager Marcel Lachemann said that it’s still possible the start could come Sunday. Starting pitcher Brian Anderson, who pitched in rehabilitation Wednesday for Class-A Lake Elsinore, will throw on the side this weekend and join the rotation next week. . . . The Angels turned down Cleveland’s request for an Aug. 15 makeup date and will play a doubleheader Sept. 2 in Cleveland to make up for Tuesday’s rainout. . . . Angel reliever Scott Lewis underwent an examination on his sore shoulder and will have a bone scan.
