HAWTHORNE : Brothers Guilty of Murder in Crash That Killed 3
Two brothers were convicted of first-degree murder Thursday for their roles in a November, 1992, car crash in Hawthorne that took the lives of three people, including a toddler and a young woman.
Jorge Antonio Espinoza, 20, and Alfredo Sanchez Espinoza, 18, were convicted by a Superior Court jury in Torrance after two days of deliberations. The brothers, scheduled for sentencing June 30, face possible life prison terms.
The Espinozas were part of a robbery gang fleeing a shooting scene with Hawthorne police in pursuit when their car streaked past a stop sign and plowed into another vehicle, prosecutors said.
Two of the four people in the car they hit--2-year-old Jameshia Perkins and Ida Logan, 23--were killed. The other two were seriously injured. Rutilo Aguilera, 20, driver of the getaway car, also was killed.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Gregory Jennings, who prosecuted the case, said another youth believed to be connected to the case remains at large. He was identified as Antonio Silva, 19.
