Oxnard : Maron Launches Bid for Assembly Seat

Former Oxnard City Councilwoman Dorothy Maron officially launched her bid Thursday to represent the 37th Assembly District, accusing incumbent Nao Takasugi of doing little since his election on behalf of his constituents.

At a press conference at Oxnard City Hall, Maron said she will do more than Takasugi to curb crime and joblessness.

“Against such urgent need, my opponent has grown tired and out of touch with the people of Ventura County,” Maron said. “Indeed, he has little to show for his legislative career in Sacramento.”

Takasugi, Oxnard’s longtime mayor, was elected to the Assembly in November, 1992. He is running unopposed Tuesday in the Republican primary in the 37th District, which covers most of Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Port Hueneme and Oxnard.

Maron, who served on the Oxnard City Council for 12 years before losing a reelection bid in 1992, is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.

The two have faced off before. In 1990, Takasugi soundly defeated Maron in Oxnard’s mayoral contest. Maron said Thursday she believes the Assembly race will have a different outcome.

“Ventura County sorely needs a legislator with vision and accomplishment who will be an active fighter for our community,” she said.
