Homeowners Groups Fight Airport Noise

Share

Three homeowners associations are distributing thousands of flyers containing the telephone numbers that people can call to lodge complaints about aircraft noise from Van Nuys and Burbank airports.

Homeowners associations from Encino, Studio City and Valley Village are mailing and handing out 8,000 flyers that urge people to “lay the foundation for changes in flight patterns.”

The mailing is the latest campaign in the homeowners’ ongoing feud with the airports over aircraft noise. Gerald Silver, an outspoken activist on the issue, has called for drastic cuts in helicopter operations out of Van Nuys Airport.

“We are doing it to provide a public service, to make it easy for people to determine the correct phone numbers,” said Silver, president of the Homeowners of Encino. “I’m hoping it will alert the airport to the gravity of the situation.”

Silver said that circulars are being mailed out now because people are more likely to hear the noise as the weather gets warmer and they spend more time out on the patio or leave their windows open.

“We are heavily impacted,” said Tony Lucente, president of the Studio City Residents Assn., which is distributing 6,000 of the flyers. “People are really uptight about this issue.”
