IRVINE : 3 Teachers Get Grants for Water Education

Three Irvine teachers have received grants that will be used to provide water education programs at their schools.

The grants were provided by the Irvine Ranch Water District and range from $100 to $500.

Mike Buetell, a teacher at Rancho San Joaquin Middle School, plans to use his grant to create a drought-resistant garden on campus.

Students will plant greenery and maintain the garden as well as receive instruction in water conservation.

Grant money also will be used to expand the school’s white paper recycling program.

Laurie Hekma, a teacher at Lakeside Middle School, will use her grant to create a three-week science program called “Irvine’s Water Story.” The program will include a hands-on ground-water model.

Gale Kahn of University Park School will use her grant to expand the number of drought-resistant gardens on campus.
