OXNARD : Council OKs Pay Raise for City Clerk

Share

After months of dispute and threats of a lawsuit against the city, the Oxnard City Council on Tuesday approved a pay raise for its city clerk, effective Nov 20.

In a 4-1 vote, the council agreed to increase Daniel Martinez’s salary from $300 per month to $450.

During the City Council meeting, Councilman Michael Plisky--the only council member to oppose the raise--accused Martinez of being inefficient and said a raise would encourage poor performance by city staff members.

Martinez, who said he was pleased with the council’s action, had no comments on Plisky’s criticism.

“He is entitled to have his opinion and I am ready to go on and get my work done,” Martinez said. “Hopefully, my next evaluation will be better.”

In April, after the city manager evaluated Martinez and concluded that he was too inexperienced to run the clerk’s office, the council denied Martinez a pay raise.

Martinez then threatened to sue the city, arguing that the raise was guaranteed by city law.
