Despite the many changes in soccer tactics, the contract between man-to-man and zone play remains.

Man-to-man tactics mark players according to their position on the field. A zone defense usually plays for the offside trap or the full press. In an offside trap, defenders move up field in an attempt to draw attackers offside immediately after losing possession of the ball. Pressuring is an aggressive attempt to control the opponent in possession of the ball.
