MOORPARK : Arroyo Vista Recreation Center to Open

Share

After nearly a yearlong delay, Moorpark’s first community recreation center will have a grand opening Saturday at Arroyo Vista Park.

The $2-million recreation center--with a modern gymnasium, two multipurpose rooms and industrial-size kitchen--is the centerpiece to a 69-acre park off Tierra Rejada Road next to Moorpark High School. It was first set to open last July during the city’s 10th anniversary celebration, but delays in construction delayed the opening a year.

“I think people in Moorpark have been dying for something like this to open,” Moorpark Community Service Director Christine Adams said.

Adams said the new recreation center will be open 80 hours a week for such activities as a night basketball league for adults, events for teen-agers and a summer day camp for children ages 5 to 10. The center will be staffed by one full-time and two part-time employees, she said.

The city has plans for close to $15 million in additional improvements, including an Olympic-size swimming pool, a lake, several tennis courts and an expanded gymnasium, Adams said.

“We have plans for all that--I just don’t know if they will be complete in my lifetime,” she said.

Saturday’s grand opening will feature a short speech by Mayor Paul Lawrason and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Along with the local dignitaries, Adams said, there will be food booths, music and an arts and crafts display.

The ceremony is open to the public and begins at 9 a.m. For more information, call 529-6864, Ext. 227.
