INSIDE & OUT : Like Clockwork

Share

Jerry Katz of Leucadia became intrigued with clocks during a trip to Italy in 1987. He set up a workshop in his garage and began tinkering with clock designs until he created a colorful, contemporary design he could call his own.

The wall clock ($180) features a dot, instead of the usual second-hand arm, which moves effortlessly about the axis, while the ball pendulum swings smoothly from side to side at the base of the face.

Wrong number--In last week’s Discoveries column, an incorrect telephone number was given for clockmaker Jerry Katz of Encinitas. The correct number is (619) 942-1941.

Katz, who still puts together his works in his garage shop, makes his timepieces out of acrylics. The colors can be changed to suit individual tastes and needs.

Tools of the Trade

Seiko Instruments of Torrance has added an electronic measurement tool to its Home Contractor line of products. The ProMeasure measures a room ultrasonically and computes the amount of materials needed for such jobs as painting, wallpapering and laying tile.

The instrument is simply pointed from wall to wall or floor to ceiling and, within a few seconds, calculates the distance. The ProMeasure computes in U.S. and metric measurement systems.

It has a compact design (about the size of most TV remote controls) and enough buttons to satisfy any channel surfer.

The ProMeasure (about $50) can be found at department and home remodeling stores throughout Orange County.

Moon Pies, of course. The traditional treat of Chattanooga Bakery Inc., which has been around for more than 75 years, is regaining popularity.

And the product line, which includes such essentials as a custom dispenser (available in two sizes, 12-pie for size $16.95, 24-pie size for $22.95, plus shipping and handling) and coffee mugs, is being expanded by Houston-based Bird Brain International.

The dispensers, made of Southern yellow pine, are designed to hang on a wall or sit on a counter or table, keeping the cookies within easy reach.
