Two Santa Ana residents were being held in Ventura County Jail on Friday on burglary charges after a sheriff’s deputy found stolen clothing in their truck during a traffic stop.

Marco Baltazar, 26, and Enrique Diaz Hernandez, 21, were arrested Thursday on burglary charges after they were found with $281 worth of stolen baby clothes from Cute ‘N Cuddly Baby Fashions in Camarillo, Detective Tim Lorenzen said.

Hernandez faces an additional charge of drug possession after deputies found about a half gram of heroin on him, Lorenzen said.

Baltazar, who escaped from a sheriff’s patrol car and had to be tracked down by helicopter, was also booked for evading arrest, officials said.

The pair apparently stopped at the Camarillo baby shop shortly before their arrest at 3:45 p.m.

One distracted a clerk, while another stuffed goods into a bag and then ran, said shop owner Lee Gardens.

“They came in and split up, then grabbed and ran,” Gardens said. “Terrible thing.”

As they made their getaway, they were stopped by Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Criger at a nearby intersection for an traffic violation, officials said.

When the pair gave conflicting statements about their identification, they were arrested for providing false information to an officer, officials said.

Further investigation turned up the stolen clothing and heroin, Lorenzen said.

While handcuffed in the sheriff’s patrol car, Baltazar managed to escape, officials said.

He was found a short time later hiding in the back yard of a nearby home, authorities said.
