SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Two males suspected of a carjacking in a church parking lot more than a month ago have been arrested by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies, who say they also found 45 balloons filled with heroin at the residence of one of them.

The men allegedly stole a 1988 Saab convertible at gunpoint after their pickup truck ran out of gas near the Newhall Church of the Nazarene, Sgt. Howard Fairchild said.

“They left the white pickup truck behind,” Fairchild said. “That’s basically how we tracked these guys.”

Marcos Zazueta, 21, was arrested Thursday in Bakersfield on suspicion of carjacking, Fairchild said. A 17-year-old male was arrested later that day at a Los Angeles residence where deputies say they found the deflated balloons hidden under a pile of clothes in a closet. Fairchild did not know the weight or street value of the drugs, but he said the packaging was “indicative of sales for heroin.”

The juvenile shared the residence with Miguel Zamora, believed to be about 20 years old, who had been arrested Wednesday on unrelated drug possession for sale charges, Fairchild said. The deputy said investigators believe Zamora might also have been involved in the carjacking.

“We’re going to make double-sure he’s the guy and then we’re going to charge him,” Fairchild said.

Zazueta and Zamora are in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail each. The juvenile is in custody without bail at Sylmar Juvenile Hall.
