*** Sounds of Blackness, “Africa to America: The Journey of the Drum,” Perspective. Though basically a gospel group, this 30-singer ensemble offers a full spectrum of black music, from spirituals and field hollers to blues, jazz and rap. On its third album, guided by executive producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the group really soars on the uplifting “Black Butterfly” and “Livin’ the Blues.”

New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent).
