Homicide investigators are looking for clues in the death of an Oxnard man who was shot in his home, an Oxnard Police Department spokesman said.

Ricardo Gonzales, 38, was shot once in the chest about 10:30 p.m. Friday and died almost instantly, a Ventura County coroner’s spokesman said. A police report said he was shot with a large-caliber weapon.

Neighbors called police after Gonzales’ family members frantically knocked on doors looking for help, a resident of the apartment complex said.

The coroner’s office spokesman said Gonzales is survived by his wife and at least one son, but neighbors said Gonzales--who they said had recently moved to the area--had at least four children.

Family members returned to the apartment early Saturday morning to retrieve belongings, a neighbor said, and then left to stay with friends.

Police have not identified any suspects or determined a motive in the shooting, a police spokesman said.
