Joseph A. Vitale; Acted on Radio, Stage and in Films

Joseph A. Vitale, 92, versatile Broadway, radio and film actor. He began his career in 1923 touring with the Shubert production of “The Student Prince” and appeared on Broadway in “Yes, Yes, Yvette” and “Golden Dawn,” in which Cary Grant made his stage debut. Vitale also worked in the Broadway musicals “Sweet Adeline,” “Present Arms,” “Flying High,” “The Gang’s All Here,” “The Little Dog Laughed,” “Hold On to Your Hat” and “I’d Rather Be Right” starring George M. Cohan. He last appeared on Broadway in 1945 in the play “Common Ground.” In Hollywood, Vitale appeared in the 1944 film “None but the Lonely Heart” and went on as a character actor in about 40 films and 70 television programs. As a member of the Masquers Club of Hollywood, he produced many of its shows, including a 1952 salute to the bicentennial of the American theater. Vitale was also active in his church, St. John Baptist De La Salle. On June 5 in Granada Hills of cancer.
