Program Rewards Children for Reading

Ventura County’s libraries on Monday kicked off their annual summer reading program, one of the few services for young readers that remain in the county after severe budget cuts in recent years.

Children who sign up for the summer reading program receive gold stickers or other small rewards for every five books they have read between Monday and Aug. 14.

The program’s purpose, organizers said, is to encourage children to crack open a book during summer vacation instead of gluing their eyes to a television set.

“Summertime is an in-between time for many children when they lose their reading skills because they’re not doing it every day,” said Julie Albright, a children’s library services technician for the county’s Library Services Agency.

Although the program has no age limit, most participants are from kindergarten age through fifth grade.

The Ventura County Library Services Agency runs the local libraries in Ventura, Camarillo, Ojai, Oak View, El Rio, Simi Valley, Port Hueneme, Moorpark and Piru.
