VAN NUYS : Mobile Toxic Waste Program to Begin

Share

A mobile hazardous waste collection program will roll into Van Nuys this week and next.

Dubbed the “Hazmobile” by the Los Angeles City Bureau of Sanitation, co-sponsor with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, the program is billed as being more convenient than the previous way of collecting hazardous waste in monthly roundup programs.

The truck and three trailers give residents an opportunity to recycle or safely discard such chemicals as paint, motor oil, antifreeze, furniture polish and insecticide.

The Hazmobile will be in Van Nuys from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and from June 23-25.

Residents must call 1-(800)-988-6942 to make an appointment for drop-offs. Later, a card is mailed to them giving the exact location of collection. Operators accept calls on the toll-free number from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The city began the Hazmobile program in February after residents complained that the monthly roundups forced people to wait in line for hours to dispose of toxic chemicals. Under the new program, residents can drive through to drop off their hazardous waste. If improperly stored or illegally disposed of through regular trash, sewers or storm drains, the waste can become health and environmental hazards, as well a potential cause of fire, city officials said.
