BURBANK : Historical Landmark Proposal Is Stalled

Share

The Burbank City Council has deadlocked over an ordinance that would, for the first time, enable the city to designate its own historical landmarks.

The proposed law was given preliminary approval June 7. But Tuesday, when a 2-2 vote was taken, council members Susan Spanos and Dave Golonski opposed the legislation and asked that a portion of it be amended.

Their opposition was based on a requirement in the ordinance that they considered to be too restrictive--the formation of a five-member historical commission made up of two nominees selected by the Burbank Historical Society, two by the Burbank Chamber of Commerce and one by the community at large.

Councilmen Bill Wiggins and Robert Bowne voted in favor of the ordinance.

A final vote is expected once Councilman George Battey Jr. is able to return to the council meetings. Battey has missed recent sessions for health reasons.

If approved, the proposed law would enable sites such as Burbank City Hall and Bellarmine-Jefferson High School to be considered historically worthy by the city.

Presently, state and federal agencies designate landmarks in Burbank, such as the downtown Burbank post office and the Bob’s Big Boy restaurant on Riverside Drive.
