MOORPARK : Appointment Urged for Council Seat

Share

Concerned that a special election will cost cash-strapped Moorpark $15,000, Councilman Scott Montgomery has suggested that his colleagues declare their intentions to appoint someone to his post if he wins a seat on the County Board of Supervisors.

November’s election includes races for two City Council members’ seats, and Montgomery suggested that the third-highest vote-getter in that race be appointed to his seat if he beats Judy Mikels for the 4th District supervisorial seat.

Councilman Bernardo Perez, who along with Councilman John Wozniak is up for reelection in November, said Montgomery’s suggestion is a bit premature.

“It is a quick and easy way to fill the position, but it just seems a bit unsettling to me,” he said.

“I think people would rather have a special election.”

Montgomery, who repeatedly prefaced his statements with “if I get elected,” asked the council to consider his idea at a future date.

“It’s an extraordinary expense,” he said. “If the council were willing to declare their intentions beforehand, people would understand that the third-place finisher could get a seat.”

No date was set, but the council agreed to consider the proposal later.
