COMMUNITY COLLEGE NOTES / STEVE KRESAL : Carlson, Kazmer, Lee Named Athletes of Year

Fullerton’s Kevin Carlson, Orange Coast’s LeAnn Kazmer and Golden West’s Jessica Lee were selected Orange County community college athletes of the year by area sports information directors.

Carlson, from Katella High, was a standout basketball player and high jumper for the Hornets. Carlson, who is 6 feet 5, averaged 16 points for Fullerton and was selected to the All-Orange Empire Conference basketball team.

With no time off, he went right from basketball to the high jump. Carlson won the State title with a jump of 7- 1/4. He is going to Southern California College next fall and will compete in basketball and track and field.

Kazmer, from Arrowhead (Wis.) High, was a standout forward for the Orange Coast women’s basketball team. She and Cypress’ Sara Works were named most valuable players of the Orange Empire Conference. Kazmer also was an all-State selection.

She helped Orange Coast reach the semifinal round of the State tournament. Kazmer averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Pirates. She accepted a scholarship to Las Vegas where she will compete in basketball and track and field.

Lee, from Capistrano Valley High School, was a setter for the Golden West women’s volleyball team that went 27-0, and won the State title. She was selected national player of the year by the American Volleyball Coaches’ Assn.

Lee, who also was selected as MVP of the Orange Empire Conference, will attend the University of Illinois next fall.

Coaches of the Year: Golden West’s Albert Gasparian (women’s volleyball) and Orange Coast’s Don Watson (swimming) were selected women’s coaches of the year by the sports information directors. Cypress’ Scott Pickler (baseball) was the men’s coach of the year.

Gasparian helped Golden West to its third State title in four seasons and has an 11-year record of 236-30 with the Rustlers. Watson’s team won its sixth consecutive State title and the 10th in 11 seasons.

Orange Coast has won 92 consecutive women’s dual meets dating to February, 1982.

Pickler guided Cypress to its second State title in the last four seasons. His team finished with a Cypress single-season record 43 victories and has a 301-153 mark after 10 seasons.

Amy Jalewalia, a former standout at La Quinta High and UCLA, will be an assistant for the Cypress women’s basketball team next fall. Jalewalia helped La Quinta to a 1990 Southern Section title.

Jalewalia will be working for Cypress Coach Kevin Kiernan, who was her coach in high school.
