Valley Hosts Sought for Foreign Students

A program that finds homes for teen-age foreign exchange students is looking for host families in the San Fernando Valley area.

“They are here to learn how to be an American teen-ager,” said Kathleen Keever, the California regional director for the Academic Year in American program, which brings 2,000 students from more than 20 countries to the United States each year.

The students are 15 to 18 years old, and spend either a school year or semester with their host families.

“By the time they leave, they feel they really have a second family,” Keever said. “About 80 to 100 of the students are placed in California, including the Los Angeles area.

“The kids who come over here are timid and shy at first. It’s a big jump for them to leave their home countries,” she said.

Those interested in being a host family can call Keever at (800) 458-7100.
