Charlton said Irish forward Tommy Coyne suffered from dehydration during the game against Italy, and Coyne had the additional misfortune of being chosen for random drug testing. He said the testing process took an unreasonably long time and Coyne spent about an hour sitting in his sweaty uniform until being told he was permitted to shower.

Charlton said Coyne, flooded with water after being dehydrated, needed a wheelchair to board the team’s plane to Florida, became ill during the flight, and needed help to disembark. His condition is being monitored.

“I was picked (for testing) four times in 1966 at Wembley and it took me an hour each time. Tommy sat there for three hours,” said Charlton, who starred for England in its 1966 World Cup triumph.
