CERRITOS : $1.8 Million in Cuts OKd by ABC School Board

Share

Counseling for elementary school students would be eliminated and special-education students would have to make do with fewer supplies under a series of budget cuts tentatively approved by the ABC Unified District school board.

The board approved almost $1.8 million in cuts during an emergency 11-hour session Saturday in an effort to balance its $69-million budget for next year. A final decision is scheduled for Tuesday.

Administrators were hit hard by the cuts. They were not given the salary increase granted to all other employee groups, resulting in a budget savings of $120,000. The school board also decided to require administrators to fill in when classroom teachers are absent. The move will save the district an estimated $160,000.

The cuts must still be reviewed by the Los Angeles County Office of Education, which has assigned a fiscal adviser to help the ABC district draw up its $69-million spending plan.

The district serves 21,000 students in Cerritos, Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens and parts of Norwalk and Lakewood.
