Norwalk-La Mirada schools chief Robert Aguilar is among five finalists being considered to succeed departing county schools Supt. Stuart E. Gothold.

Aguilar, 54, has headed the 20,000-student school system since May, 1990. He has two years left on his contract, said school board President Rudy Bermudez.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is expected to make its final selection in late July or early August, said Shigeki Kikkewa, who is organizing the superintendent search for the county administrative office.

Aguilar is one of two school district superintendents in Los Angeles County to be considered for Gothold’s post. The other is Ronald Hockwalt, who heads the Walnut Valley Unified School District in the San Gabriel Valley community of Walnut.

Two administrators from the county Office of Education are also being considered: Gilberto Anzaldua, an assistant county superintendent for educational services, and H. Jennifer Hartman, an assistant county superintendent for educational programs. The fifth candidate is Donald Ingwerson, a former superintendent from the Jefferson County School District in Louisville, Ky.

Gothold announced earlier this year that he will retire from his $118,000-a-year post by Sept. 1. He has held the job for 14 years.
