SANTA ANA : Council Restricts Garage-Sale Days
The City Council has given final approval to an ordinance that allows garage sales only on the first weekend in March, June, September and December.
The ordinance was drafted in an effort to crack down on illegal businesses and clean up the city’s neighborhoods, where residents use frequent yard sales as both a means of income and an affordable shopping alternative to secondhand stores.
The first city-sanctioned garage sale weekend will be in September, according to code enforcement officials, who will begin to cite violators in August.
City officials said they will spend the next month getting the word out to residents via water bills and the media about the new law.
Once the ordinance takes effect, anyone holding a garage sale outside the four sanctioned weekends risks a fine and will have the goods confiscated, pending a hearing.
