Cotkin & Collins: Partners in the firm’s Orange County law office said Thursday that they will sever their ties to the Los Angeles-based law firm in mid-July, making official what had long been a separate practice.

The amicable split-up will create the Collins & Naeve law firm in Santa Ana with four partners, seven associate lawyers and a support staff of 12. It will continue to limit its practice to defense work in the health care, employment, insurance, business and professional liability fields.

The Los Angeles office, with eight partners and 10 associates, has not selected a new name yet.

Philip S. Gutierrez, a partner in the Santa Ana office, said the two offices had become separate practices with little reliance on each other and had gone increasingly in different directions. While the Santa Ana office specialized in corporate defense, he said, the Los Angeles lawyers have been representing corporate plaintiffs and state and local government agencies.

The split, which becomes effective July 15, will put James P. Collins Jr., William D. Naeve, David A. Winkle and Gutierrez in charge of the Santa Ana office.
