A Peace Academy Camp for high school student leaders will be held Aug. 28 through 31 in the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area of Angelinas Oaks in San Bernardino County.

The camp is designed to foster appreciation of a multicultural society by providing students with skills to enhance intergroup understanding in their schools and communities.

“The Peace Academy is an exciting and innovative project which will help develop Orange County’s next generation of leaders who face unprecedented social and educational challenges,” Orange County Board of Education member Elizabeth Dorn Parker said.

Tuition for the camp is $200, which includes transportation and is open to students in ninth through 12th grade, including this June’s graduates. A number of scholarships are available. The camp is part of the Hands Across the Campus program sponsored by the American Jewish Committee. For information, call (714) 660-7220.

Dance Chance

SpiralWest, a new all-age, alcohol-free dance club, will open in Newport Beach, offering the chance to socialize with friends on Sunday evenings through mid-September.

The Sundays-only club will operate at the Warehouse, a multilevel restaurant overlooking a marina at 3450 Via Oporto. It opens this Sunday at 8 p.m.

Offerings include two dance floors, a live disc jockey, pool tables, light show and promotional giveaways.

The success of a SpiralWest club in Encino spurred its owners--two USC college students--to open the Orange County facility.

People who drive slow. People who stop right in front of you in the hall to talk to their friends.

People who slurp their cereal. When guys spit. When people say “hi” and you don’t know who they are. People who brag too much.
