GROUP E at Citrus Bowl, Orlando, Fla.

Ireland vs. Mexico

* TIME: 9:30 a.m. PDT

* TELEVISION: ESPN, Univision.

* KEY MATCHUPS: Ireland builds its game on running, so heat and humidity may sap the players’ energy and hurt their performance. Mexico favors short, crisp passes, a style more suitable for anticipated temperatures in the mid-90s and humidity not much below that. Ireland will try to control the midfield and rely on counterattacks for its offense, primarily along the wings. The Irish play a physical style, which contrasts with Mexico’s reliance on individual skills.

Mexican Coach Miguel Mejia Baron was unhappy with his team’s technique in a 1-0 loss to Norway in its tournament opener--especially its failure to speed up the game. He has promised lineup changes. Look for playmaker Alberto Garcia Aspe to return, after a one-game suspension, and an appearance by veteran forward Carlos Hermosillo.

* OUTLOOK: Mexico’s defenders were criticized in the team’s 1-0 loss, and they will be tested again today by Ireland’s speed on the outside. Ramon Ramirez, who plays the left side, will probably be sent up to join the attack more than he was against Norway. Mexico can’t afford to fall behind by more than a goal.

* OUTCOME: Ireland can afford to sit back and play for a tie, but Mexico desperately needs a victory. If Ireland scores early, it will simply try to hang on. If Mexico scores first, Ireland will have to press to pull even and might become vulnerable enough defensively for Mexico to win by two goals.
