WORLD CUP USA ’94 / THE FIRST ROUND : SPOTLIGHT : NOT ENOUGH SHAIBUS

Share

They’re not booing, they’re yelling Shaibu! Shaibu! or the Russian chant for “Score! Score!”

Or, at least a loose interpretation. Shaibu , pronounced Sha-boo, actually means “Puck,” and is the verbiage used to cheer on Mother Russia’s hockey teams. The 200 or so Russian fans who followed their team to the Silverdome, where the Russians lost, 3-1, to Sweden on Friday, use the same exclamation for soccer.

Seems to be a shortage of everything in Russia.
