* COMMUNITY GROUP FUNDING: Approved the use of $10,000 from city coffers to partially fund several community organizations in Holden’s Council District 10. Among those to receive money are the Cherrywood Avenue Block Club, the 29th Street Block Club, the Lafayette Square Block Club, the Hauser Avenue Block Club and the 10th District Women’s Steering Committee.

* WYATT EARP MEMORIAL: Approved a motion recognizing that 4004 West 17th St.--currently the address of Mount Vernon Junior High School--was once the site of legendary lawman Wyatt Earp’s summer home. The motion requests that the Los Angeles Unified School District install a commemorative marker at the site. Earp, who died in 1929, spent his summers in Los Angeles the last 25 years of his life. Councilman Nate Holden, presenter of the motion, said: “We need more Wyatt Earps today to make our city safer.”

* REWARD OFFERING: Approved offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for the murder of Ismael Salinas, who was shot to death May 28 by two men who came to his front door at 1938 W. Manchester Boulevard. Salinas, 40, was celebrating his daughter’s 15th birthday at the time of the shooting. The suspects apparently were panhandling when they came to Salinas’ house.

* LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT: Authorized the city attorney to withdraw $195,000 from the city’s reserve fund to settle a lawsuit with Jerri Brown, who sued the city for assault and battery by the Los Angeles Police Department, false imprisonment and violation of her civil rights.

* HOPE IN YOUTH: Approved the Community Development Department’s selection of Catholic Charities, a 75-year-old nonprofit organization, to serve as the administrator of the city’s Hope in Youth Project. The main objectives of the project are to provide alternative activities for gang members, create independent parent organizations that will be involved with school functions and to build a support network for parents whose families have been hurt by gang violence. The plan also calls for Catholic Charities to select up to eight subcontractor organizations to assist it in operating the Hope in Youth Project. Passed 12-0. Voting yes: Richard Alatorre, Mike Hernandez, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Rita Walters, Nate Holden, Jackie Goldberg, Rudy Svorinich Jr.
