But Can They Pull an Upset Again?

Share

Soccer fans in this country probably still don’t quite believe what has come to pass in the 15th World Cup tournament, the first ever held in the United States.

We’re not referring to the many Americans who are casual about soccer, focusing on the game as they do the Olympics--every four years when the world gathers for a big event. We’re talking true believers, the hard core that follows the game as the staunchest foreign soccer fans do.

For many--even with three days to celebrate the remarkable 2-1 upset the U.S. national team scored Wednesday afternoon in Pasadena’s Rose Bowl over soccer power and pre-tournament favorite Colombia--the achievement no doubt still seems more like a wonderful dream than reality.

Soccer experts are nearly unanimous in proclaiming the U.S. victory the most significant upset in World Cup history--the day the world’s favorite sport got the attention, and perhaps even won acceptance, in the United States. And that victory set up yet another big game today in the same historic stadium.

Next up for the talented American team is Romania, and a win or a tie guarantees the U.S. team a spot in the tournament’s next round. Today’s game will even be on network television, showcasing the sport before the nation, to the delight of aficionados.

So here’s hoping for another great game by the American team, and continued success in a tournament that is getting to be more exciting with each passing day. Our World Cup truly runneth over!
