Oxnard Postal Worker Dies After Shooting

A 40-year-old postal worker from Oxnard found slumped in an alley with a single gunshot wound to his side was the apparent victim of a homicide, Oxnard police said Sunday.

Rodney McClain died en route to St. John’s Regional Medical Center late Saturday, police said.

Police were called to the 1300 block of South Oxnard Boulevard about 10:30 p.m. Saturday after reports of a shooting and found McClain bleeding in an alley between a drive-in theater and the Oxnard Mobile Home Lodge along Commercial Avenue.

Investigators have not found any motive and have not found a weapon, although police said McClain was most likely shot with a small-caliber handgun.

No further information about the case was available Sunday. The case has been turned over to the Oxnard Police Department’s major crimes unit.

Residents of the mobile-home park lodge said they were not surprised to hear of the violence.

“It’s just not all that unusual to hear gunshots around here . . . especially because of the Fourth of July parties going on,” resident Maria Lopez said.

An autopsy was conducted Sunday by the Ventura County coroner’s office, Senior Deputy Coroner Dale Zentzis said. McClain had been shot in the hip area on his right side and most likely bled to death as a result of the injury, he said.

McClain is survived by his father, William McClain; his mother, whose name was not available, and one sister in the military, according to investigators.
