Orange County Sheriff’s Capt. Doug Storm, a 21-year department veteran, has been promoted to assistant sheriff.

Storm is currently commander of the Regional Narcotics Suppression Program and will replace Assistant Sheriff Walter Fath, who is retiring, Sheriff Brad Gates announced last week.

Storm started with the Sheriff’s Department in 1973 as a jail deputy and worked through the ranks in the investigative and operations divisions.

He recently transferred from his post as the south Orange County operations commander, where he developed law enforcement contracts with Mission Viejo, Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills and San Clemente.

Fath, who will be leaving the department at the end of the current county budget process, developed the sheriff’s South County substation in Laguna Niguel. After he was promoted to captain in 1975, Fath commanded the patrol and records divisions. He was promoted to assistant sheriff in 1981.
