CITY HALL : CARSON : Budget Would Trim Jobs, Drop City Events

The city manager has proposed a budget that cuts part-time staff, shortens park hours and cancels city-sponsored events.

Without these cuts, the city would face a $1.4-million deficit, said City Administrator Lawrence G. Olson.

The $30.4-million spending plan also reduces the frequency of street sweeping and mowing of the city’s grassy areas. Olson said that almost every department would have reduced staff hours, especially among part-time employees.

Cutting back the hours of part-time staff in many departments should save the city $100,000, Olson said.

Twelve special events such as Cinco de Mayo, the jazz festival and Martin Luther King Day would all be eliminated under the proposed budget. Those cuts would save the city $40,000 in direct costs and significantly more money in staff time, Olson said.

Public parks in the city would close at 7 p.m. rather than 9 p.m., saving money on staff and utilities.

City employees, who have not had a pay raise in four years, could get a 1% to 2% one-time bonus under this budget, Olson said. If the council decided to do that, it would cost about $100,000, he said.

A final public hearing on the matter will be at the July 5 council meeting, and the council may approve it that night, Olson said.
