Audiences ‘Adopt’ Props to Help Prop Up Theater

In an effort to put a new face on fund raising, the Music Theatre of Southern California is inviting the public to “adopt” props, sets and costumes for its upcoming production of “Peter Pan.”

Marjorie Lindbeck, development director for the San Gabriel theater, said she thought it would be enticing for people to donate by giving money that is then designated as purchasing a specific item, such as Capt. Hook’s hook or Tinkerbell’s bell.

So far, Lindbeck said, about $5,000 has been raised from people adopting props and other items in the play, which runs July 8-24. Donors can adopt such items as Tinkerbell’s laser light for $500, or a bargain item such as Smee’s hat for $10. “Everything helps,” Lindbeck said.

In return, donors will receive certificates acknowledging their participation, will have their names included in the program and will be able to go backstage to mingle with the actors after the curtain goes down.

“It’s a lasting gift,” Lindbeck said. “Theater is a magical thing, and I thought this would be a good way to include people in that.”

About 35% of the theater’s $1.3-million annual budget comes from donations.

Cindy Wilbert of Chino Hills, who used to sit on the theater’s board of directors, donated $50 for the toy blocks used in the play on behalf of her 10-year-old son, Jeremy.

“ ‘Peter Pan’ was the only musical production I had ever missed at the theater,” Wilbert said. “So I’m really glad I’ll have the chance to see it.”
