GLENDALE : Garage Demolition to Begin Wednesday

Share

Demolition work on the quake-damaged parking garage at the Glendale Fashion Center will begin Wednesday, according to a construction company hired for the project.

The city-owned, three-level garage sustained about $2 million in damage after the Northridge earthquake and has since been closed.

Some interior columns made of reinforced concrete almost collapsed, said Dick Eychner, who is overseeing the demolition work for Evans Brothers Inc. of Livermore, Calif.

A section of Wilson Avenue near the parking structure will be closed to eastbound traffic for two weeks, starting on Tuesday.

It will take up to 75 days to tear down the garage, which is 324 feet long and 266 feet wide, Eychner said.

“It doesn’t look as bad as the Glendale Galleria garage or the (Cal State) Northridge garage, but with the damage it’s not feasible to fix it,” he said.
